Primary purpose of job:

The Direct Marketing Manager will play an important role in raising $3.5 million in annual revenue (as of fy’15 and to increase over time) through direct marketing efforts for the acquisition, solicitation and stewardship of individual donors under $10,000.  To ensure that annual financial goals are met, the manager will regularly analyze data and recommend appropriate strategies.
Principal duties and responsibilities:
  • Manage day-to-day activities related to acquiring, renewing, and upgrading individual donors who give gifts under $10,000, using multi-channel direct marketing strategies;
  • Work closely with vendors (print and online direct marketing consultants) on the conception, drafting, editing, design and production of marketing pieces, including appeals, acknowledgements, and other donor communications;
  • Recommend enhancements, test options, and modifications and/or new incentives as appropriate;
  • Work closely with Marketing & Communications and Program teams to stay informed on Food Bank’s work, initiatives, recent accomplishments and graphic needs for appropriate messaging, look, and timing of hard-copy and online appeals and other channel outreach;
  • Lead strategy development, execution and stewardship plan for Big Apple Partners, a monthly giving program;
  • Regularly analyze financial data to ensure goals are achieved.  Proactively recommend strategies whenever issues arise and to enhance the Program;
  • Collaborate with consultants and Senior Director on the creation, implementation and monitoring of the direct marketing annual plan and budget;
  • Work closely with Fundraising Operations team on appropriate data needs and management in Raiser’s Edge;
  • Oversee the Remote Cultivate and Stewardship Program (RCSP) to ensure that as many Food Bank donors are receiving stewardship outreach (numerous staff to make actual contact through phone, email and notes);
  • Lead coordination of marketing efforts with federations for optimum Food Bank For NYC exposure at high ROI;
  • Produce planned giving direct marketing mailers in collaboration with Individual and Major Giving Director, Fundraising Operations Director and planned giving marketing consultant;
  • Attend conferences and other educational opportunities to enhance skills and stay on top of developing trends;
  • Work collaboratively with other staff members to accomplish goals and objectives of the External Relations division;
  • Perform all other duties as required.
  • Minimum of three years of relevant work experience, preferably in a non-profit;
  • Ability to set priorities, manage production schedules and meet deadlines;
  • Creative and highly-detailed thinker;
  • Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills;
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet and preferably Raiser’s Edge and Convio Luminate;
  • Experience with or knowledge of social service/hunger issues is a plus.
