The successful candidate for the Advanced Development Engineer will conduct early phase engineering investigation, concept development and prototype/validation of new product offerings in collaboration with product designers, market researchers and product management.  Develop technical product requirements from consumer needs, facilitate early product costing and manufacturing strategy proposals and manage project technical handoff to product engineering team.
 
The ideal candidate must be able to:
 
  • Develop high quality product concept ideas for consumer-focused advanced products development.
  • Clarify the ambiguity of early product development inputs – seek to understand consumer needs and how they translate to product solutions.
  • Utilize multiple methods for prototype development and fabrication.  Facilitate new materials and processes investigations, as well as new methods for manufacture to enable product development.
  • Validate consumer needs in collaboration with Marketing and Product Management organization, and ensure that product concepts and designs align with those needs through consumer research.
  • Define product functional requirements based upon consumer/market needs.
  • Determine product tradeoffs in functionality, risks, overall costs and project scope.
  • Utilize effective prototype methods to enable fast learning.
  • Leverage partner resources within and outside Leatherman in developing solutions that ensure the product needs are achieved.  Identify and work with 3rd parties as needed to complete projects, such as prototype builds or testing.
  • Design and coordinate construction and use of testing fixtures that verify a design’s ability to meet functional objectives.
  • Conceptualize and recommend new ideas that support Leatherman’s mission and vision.
  • Recommend manufacturing processes and technologies, and seek to identify methods new to Leatherman that most effectively enable product realization.
  • Have genuine passion for Leatherman products and principles, and the desire to extend the brand to new markets and consumers.
  • Provide technical and leadership mentoring to other engineers and team members.
  • Be a champion for Leatherman Product Advanced Development Process and seek to bring new ideas to the process where applicable.
  • Identify product patent and intellectual property opportunities, and work with corporate legal partners in capturing content.
 
Experience and Education Requirements:
 
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering is required, Mechanical Engineering is preferred.
  • Five or more years of mechanical design, product development or product innovation experience required.
  • Consumer products experience preferred, with familiarity in consumer-based market research and application to product development.
  • Understanding of NPI (New Product Introduction) processes, and experience with consumer-based products.
  • Strong familiarity with rapid prototype processes and options in metals, plastics and composite materials.
  • Proficiency in advanced CAD modeling and drafting is required, SolidWorks experience is preferred.
  • High technical competence for Leatherman products and processes.
  • Demonstrated capability for concept development and idea generation – think of five ways to do something, now think of five more.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills – exhibit a high level of emotional intelligence and willingness to empathize, both with the consumer and team.
  • Desire to push and challenge limitations on manufacturing processes, cost constraints, supplier capabilities and established methods – find a better way to do things.
  • Seek to fully understand the needs for the product, and have conviction in supporting your solutions.
  • Work well both independently and collaboratively - possess a high level of self-motivation and initiative for product development and creation.
 
Physical Demands:
 
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; balance; use hands to finger, handle, grasp, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms, some overhead. The employee is occasionally required to lift up to 50 lbs.; sit; climb; twist, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
