GRTC Transit System in Richmond, Virginia seeks a skilled individual to oversee mechanical repairs to vehicles (predominately diesel powered passenger buses, but includes some gasoline powered vehicles), both in a shop and during service calls to repair and/or recover vehicles.  


WHO MAY APPLY

This position is open to all GRTC employees and the general public.  Candidates must be able to pass a background check, pre-employment drug test and DOT physical.  Candidates must have a good driving record with a point balance of five (5).  
A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class B or higher with a Passenger (P) Endorsement is preferred or a CDL Learner’s permit required, and CDL required within 90 days of employment .

WORK SCHEDULE

The ability to work a flexible work schedule is requires. Work hours may include various  shift schedules to include nights and weekends, depending on work assignment. 

 


JOB DESCRIPTION

Responsible for ensuring mechanically sound and safe motor vehicles are available in an economically timely manner, to include mechanical repairs to motor vehicles (predominately diesel powered passenger buses, but includes some gasoline powered vehicles), both in a shop and during service calls to repair and/or recover vehicles.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directs staff of mechanics and shop cleaning personnel.

 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides technical assistance regarding vehicle repair and maintenance.

  • Makes decisions on necessary repairs and replacement of parts and units.

  • Prepares requisitions for repair parts and supplies.

  • Prepares daily time sheets, checks and approves time records.

  • Administers company and departmental policies.

  • Performs Quality Assurance Inspections on all vehicle repair work.

  • Schedules and assigns job assignments and monitors workflow, investigating reasons for delays and takes appropriate steps to prioritize and expedite the process.

  • Schedules all vehicle repairs and preventive maintenance defect repairs.

  • Trains and evaluates employees.

  • Monitors the condition of all vehicles and recommends repairs or replacement when needed.

  • Prepares written reports, documents defects / repairs on inspection forms, work orders, and designated computer programs.

  • Ensures adherence to company procedures, standards and safe work practices.

  • Contacts and oversees outside venders in the completion of vehicle warranty repairs.

  • Ensures that towing and road / service calls of vehicles are handled in a timely manner.

  • Checks for the serviceability of tools / equipment and ensure that all personnel are trained in the proper use all tools and equipment.

Required Knowledge, Abilities and Skills essential to Job Functions

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Three to five years experience as a bus repair and overhaul mechanic specializing in diesel equipment.

  • Experience supervising mechanics and service employees, preferably in a mass transit setting.

  • Knowledge of using computerized maintenance software systems required.

  • Knowledge of various Microsoft programs.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required.

  • Knowledge of OSHA safety procedures.

  • Knowledge of GRTC Drug and Alcohol Policy.

  • Knowledge and experience working in a union environment.

  • Ability to manage others and make independent decisions.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills required.

  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to read, understand and use technical information found in repair manuals, service change bulletins, and applicable technical documents / manuals.

  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  • Ability to work with outside weather conditions, wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and loud work environment.

 

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor's degree preferred, diploma/GED required.                  

  • Virginia Commercial Drivers License Class B  with Passenger endorsement
